Some more information about the history of drinking horns
In our online shop at LARP-Fashion.co.uk we always like to give you some more information about articles for medieval or fantasy LARP. The horn as a drinking vessel is not an invention of the Vikings. The Vikings also never wore horns on their helmets. That is just a modern fairy tale. As mentioned above, people have been using drinking horns for at least 25,000 years. The Neanderthals realised even before Homo Sapiens that the horns of the large grass-eaters were a good way to transport water or drink it.
In any case, a 25,000-year-old limestone figurine shows a woman with a horn that she leads towards her mouth. Our ancestors were very fond of these horns. As early as 600 B.C., a Celtic prince was given nine drinking horns in his grave. All were elaborately studded with bronze. 1000 years later, the people of Europe already knew how to make glass. They made a conspicuously large number of glass drinking vessels - and most of them had this horn shape. This clearly indicates that people in the Middle Ages attached a cultic significance to the horn.
The Viking drinking horn
It was mainly the Vikings who associated great powers with the horn. The best-known mead-horn of that early period is mentioned in one of the Viking sagas of the Old Norse. The "Grímr inn góði" was Grim the Good. This horn of the Viking saga had a human head. It served as a magical drinking vessel, gave the owner great powers and could foretell the future. The fallen heroes of the Vikings and Germanic tribes, got drunk on mead in drinking horns - together with the gods in Valhalla. And in Valhalla this was done without any of the nasty consequences of today's drinking bouts. Among the Goths, the drinking horns were even beaten into silver.
It is hardly surprising that the Scythian horsemen from the region of today's Ukraine even made drinking horns out of gold. In the Renaissance at the end of the Middle Ages, it was not only crowns and castles that grew in height. Drinking horns, too, were transformed into veritable showpieces of precious metal with emeralds and other precious stones. So if your eyes light up today when you see one of these beautiful drinking horns, don't be surprised. This admiration has already been laid in your cradle for many generations. So follow the call of your ancestors and purchase a magnificent mead-horn from our online shop - at a really good price.
