Tabards in the Middle Ages
Since the Crusades, the tabards or tunics have been the means of choice for making a statement about one's allegiance. This was urgently needed, because in the Middle Ages a knight could hardly be recognised by his armour alone. There was also another important factor. The sun in the Orient could burn hot. It quickly became unbearably warm in the armour. This extended to burns from the metal on the skin. So the tabard was usually worn over the armour. In the early and high Middle Ages, only knights and noblemen were allowed to wear surcoats. White or black with splendid decorations and of course the embroidered coat of arms in bright colours, the knights then led their foot soldiers into battle.
But even when riding without armour, the surcoat could be worn in the Middle Ages as a garment similar to the tunic. Before the era of nations and their flags, the coats of arms of the noble families were the only signs of affiliation. The time for uniforms was still a long way off in the Middle Ages. Uniform colours were only known on pennants, sashes or capes. These were then worn by squires, lansquenets or mercenaries. But in the Middle Ages, such luxuries were only available in the safe haven of the homeland. On the road on a military campaign or crusade in the Middle Ages, there was hardly any thought of such elaborate symbolic care for the garments.
What did coats of arms look like as garments in the Middle Ages?
Remembering their function as garments, surcoats were cut wide over the armour. While the surcoat was mostly plain in the early Middle Ages, the tendency towards ornamentation prevailed later. In addition to embroidery, the surcoats could then bear many other borders, trimmings or even fur trimmings. In the absence of modern cotton, surcoats were made of linen or densely woven wool. The now famous surcoat of the unknown knight in black was probably very rare at that time. Black was not suitable for protecting knights from the heat of the sun. It was not for nothing that the tabards and coats of arms of the Knights Templar and other knights of the Order in the Orient were white with the well-known red cross or lions. In terms of cut, surcoats in the Middle Ages probably took the form of a sleeveless tunic. Then they were held together with a belt.
