Even the ancient Egyptians and before that the Sumerians used a round shield. The first shields were made of wickerwork covered with cloth. Protective shields have always evolved along with weapons.
The more efficient the arrows and swords or lances became, the more stable a round shield or long shield had to become. Over the millennia, after wicker came leather with a wooden frame. After the wood of the Vikings, metal and later steel were added in the Middle Ages.
For knights in the Middle Ages, every shield also served to identify the nobles for whom it was used in battle. Shields were used for many rituals. Vikings and other warriors in the Middle Ages were laid to rest with their weapons on them or to be burned with their boat.
Good protection in battle with a LARP shield
You need a shield as a strong knight in the Middle Ages who often takes on multiple opponents. You also need a shield as a raiding Viking who wants to protect himself from the attacks of the defenders. A suitable and defensive shield made of leather, wood or metal should be a crucial accessory in every fight. Only in this way can you protect yourself in a LARP fight and defend yourself well against several attackers. Worn on the back, a shield can fulfil another valuable function. It ensures that attacks from ambush are less dangerous, especially from archers. This is true even if the shield and arrows are made of foam. After all, you have to be sure of your back, especially in unknown territory. A shield gives the important feeling of security. With a LARP round shield or large shield you can walk much more confidently through the alleys or storm across the marketplace.
LARP shield - authentic but harmless
At a LARP event or a medieval market, the masks, the garb and all the accessories simply have to look authentic. Like the jewellery or the masks at carnival, the protective shield at LARP is no exception. Of course, the real shields made of metal are not only quite heavy, but also too dangerous. A LARP shield, like all our articles, is specially adapted to the needs for the medieval LARP. As padded weapons made of solid foam, the shields offer the advantage of being much lighter. This makes it possible to carry the foam shield with you all day without the heavy weight of iron or steel weakening you.
Due to the light and flexible material, injuries with these LARP weapons are almost impossible. This means that you can be more violent in a fight - but your opponent will remain unharmed in any case. The choice of weapons and shields for the medieval LARP
But which weapons and which shields suit you and your LARP character? How did you design your character for medieval LARP and how did it develop? If your character is based more on fantasy, the choice of shield for the LARP is easier - because almost everything fits into fantasy. However, if you represent a Viking, a knight or even a crusader at the medieval LARP, you are rather fixed in your choice. The shield shows your attitude and your affiliation in battle. The Viking at the LARP is recognised by the round shield made of wood or leather. The Viking's round shield often has the typical hump and may be reinforced with iron. In medieval LARP, on the other hand, the knight's shield of an order can be recognised by the typical cross or the colours of the order.
