Viking shoes and boots

Footwear of the time was not divided by gender, but by purpose. Vikings who went on raids needed different shoes from those who stayed at home tending cattle. And whether Viking or Goth, Celt or Lombard, in the early Middle Ages, shoes and boots were shaped more by the skills and materials available than by tribal affiliation.

It is possible, of course, that the boot at the court of an English prince was already fastened with buckles, while the Vikings on the ship were still wearing tied or laced boots. But within a few years, the new material or technique had been adopted and quickly caught on.

Shoemaking developed late as a craft

Shoes had to be strong and, if possible, protect against the cold and rain. Leather was therefore the material of choice. The Vikings often used goatskin, as can be seen in some finds from Haithabu, while other tribes preferred leather from cattle or game. In any case, sturdy shoes or boots were a highly prized commodity in the Middle Ages. The leather was valuable and the production costly. Children, maids, servants and farmhands wore clogs when they were not barefoot. Shoes, and even more so boots, were reserved for gentlemen or warriors, whether Viking, Saxon or English. Viking clogs or shoes were certainly not comfortable. The soles were usually made of wood. The technique of making heavy leather soles came later with the shoemakers. The leather also had to be relatively thin at first, because for many years in the Middle Ages shoes or boots were turned after sewing. This made it harder for water and cold to penetrate.
